Today, I told Kara she was a little monkey. She said "You called me monkey? I call you mommy. You're the boss!"
I'm not sure where she learned that, but I like it!

25 Weeks
This has been an eventful week, I really hope this next one isn't as chaotic! Here is the picture of me at 25 weeks.

Just Because
This morning, we put her panties on and she happened to see this hat that she has (it has a kitty on it), so she immediately put it on after breakfast and started running around the house with it on (sideways, I might add).
She has been awfully precocious lately. Yesterday when we were driving to Denver, she told me "mommy, my name is Kara." I told her that she was right, so then she said, "Don't call me Kara. Call me babe!"
She also knows how to spell her name, which is so cute, and tells me "B is for Bouncy Ball," among other things. We have been working on numbers and letters a lot, so it is fun to see her starting to put things together.
And just because, here is the picture of her from this morning!

The Name Tradition
*I updated this post with some pictures and some updated info. I also wrote another post about May today, so don't forget to read that one if you want to!
Names are very important in my family. We are all named after someone (or someones) in our family--people that are important to us--and we believe that being named after someone is like carrying a piece of history. It is a way of remembering and honoring people you love, and that you should be proud of your name.
With that in mind, here is some history about the names in our family: I was named after a beloved great-great Aunt Rachel. She is someone that my Great-Grandpa thinks very highly of, and I am proud to be named after her. I am also named after my grandma Amy (as it is tradition for the eldest daughter to be named after one of her grandmothers). I have always loved that I was named after my grandma. I love my grandma very much, and we share a lot of things in common (like being clumsy, always spilling on our shirts, and being the oldest siblings in our families).
My sister is named after our Aunt (who we all adore) and my mom's cousin. My mom wanted to have my sister be named after my aunt, but wanted her name to be a little bit different so she could have her own identity and not be a "junior," and thus named her subtle variations of her first and middle names.
My brother is named first after two of our grandpas (one on each side) and then after two of our uncles. Again, my mom spelled his name differently so he could have his own identity.
Jon is not named after anyone in particular--his parents had a hard time coming up with a name. His grandma came up with three suggestions for names when he was born, one of them being Jonathan Scott, and his mom and dad liked that name the best. While he isn't named specifically after somebody, I think it is pretty special that his grandma named him!
So that leaves our children: Kara Leigh is named after three people. Kara is a derivative of my mom's name to keep with my family tradition of naming girls. Plus, I love my mom, and I love the name Kara. We have a lot of different women named variations of "Karen" on my mom's side, so unfortunately for Kara, I mix her up with those other names quite frequently (most often my sister!) However, it was very important to me (and to Jon) that we incorporate the Overson side of the family in to her name as well, so her middle name is after both Jon's mom and Jon's older sister who both have the same middle name, only with a different spelling. As I understand it, the eldest daughter on Jon's side of the family has the same middle name as her mother, so they have a similar tradition to us, which I think is pretty cool.
Jessalyn Rose is getting her name from several people as well. First and foremost, she is named after Jon's little sister, Kaylynn. I don't know why, but I have just always thought there was something special about being named after an aunt or an uncle. I think there's just a special bond in being named after an aunt or uncle. Then, of course, the name Jessalyn came from my mom who made the name as a combination of both my uncle on my mom's side, and my aunt on my dad's side, so those are the three people she will be named after. I also have a great-great-grandpa named Jesse (which I believe is where my uncle got his name), so Jesse is a name rich with family history for us! I wish I could say something important about Rose, but I have just always thought that was a pretty name, and I think it looks especially pretty with Jessalyn.
So there you have it! The history of our names! Just as I am sure most people do, we put a lot of thought in to the names we have chosen, but I think they are especially meaningful because they all come from people that we love!

May Happenings
We've been pretty busy lately. I finally wrapped up the semester (which seemed like it took forever), and in the meantime, applied to transfer to CU Denver. I got in, but unfortunately, the school only accepted 59 of my credits. 59! Needless to say, it was a little disheartening, and set my anticipated graduation date back from Spring 2013 to Fall 2014. I just had a lot of credits from UNM that CU couldn't find a place for. However, the good news is I can start my student teaching internships in Spring 2013--so one more semester of regular classes, and then I get to start doing the fun stuff!
I've also been busy with working, but I have been (trying) to make myself rest in the mornings and take it easy per doctor's orders. Let me tell you, that's really hard for me. I have another appointment next week, so we'll see what the doc says then.
A few months ago, I decided Kara was displaying the signs that she was ready to potty train--and she was--but I wasn't. We started it a little bit, but I was just too busy with school and other things going on in our life and didn't feel like I could devote the right amount of time in order to get her to potty train successfully. I gave up after a few days, but kept talking to Kara about the potty and having big-girl panties, and so forth. For the last few weeks, we've been telling Kara that as soon as I was done with school, we were going to stop wearing diapers and go on the potty. Well, on Saturday (with a little urging from my mom), we decided the time had come, and let Kara run around without any pants on. She would sit on the potty, and she didn't have any accidents, but still refused to actually use the potty--she just waited until nap or bed time when we put the pull-ups on her. Sunday was the same story. Monday was the same at first, but I finally told Jon "she's not putting pull-ups on until she actually uses the potty." Well, at the end of the day at 8:45 (normally her bedtime is 8:00) she took herself to the potty and used it! Woo! We were so proud of her! Today we put panties on, and she's had two accidents, but after that, had successful potty tries. I am so glad that we decided to go ahead and do potty training, because I think everybody at our house is ready for it.
As for Jon, he's just doing his usual: working and reading and hanging out and being a dad. It has been so helpful to have him around to help with potty training! He's changing schedules for a few weeks, but then we hope he will be put permanently on his current shift because it has worked REALLY well for us with school, work, and Kara schedules. If he can keep this shift, we will rarely need a babysitter while I am at work or school, which would be a huge relief.
So that's what's new (or old) with us!

To the Moms
This little girl makes being a mom the best experience ever. I love her sweet face and everything about her! Being a mom is the most important "job" I can think of, both for those who are moms to their own children, and those who are mothers to their nieces and nephews, students, and more. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms in my life, and Jon and Kara's lives!

Friday Morning Madness
Our morning has been an adventure. When I was in the shower, Kara used her stool to help herself to chocolate in the candy drawer. When I got out, I was met with a giant mess of wrappers on the floor and chocolate all over her face.
Later, Kara decided to throw all the toys out of one of the toy boxes and yelled "mommy, look! I can lay down!" Climbing in and out of the box has entertained her now for at least 30 minutes!
